Laying Dog
By Colin Bradley
This dog portrait is one of a series of thirteen from our starter pack range.
Stage 1
|
I started by applying 101 to the left ear and side of the head in the direction of the fur, then adding a little 184, 273 and 187 before darkening with 176 as shown. |
Below is a table of the colours and their numbers used in this example:
| 101 - White | 187 - Burnt Ochre |
| 184 - Dark Naples Ochre | 199 - Black |
| 273 - Warm Grey | 176 - Van Dyke Brown |
Stage 2
|
I laid the foundation colours to the eye with 101 for the highlight, 187 for the top of the iris, 184 for the bottom of the iris, 101 then 184 on top of 101 below iris and 273 for the bottom of the eye. Note how the white pencil lines follow the direction of the fur on the head, although this application should be solid, as shown on the left side. |
Stage 3
|
The eye is darkened by carefully adding 176 and 199. Add the mid tone colours, 184, 187, and 273 to darken the fur, adding 176 lightly to strengthen and add detail. 101 is applied to the highlights on the nose. |
Stage 4
|
273 is added to the nose and mouth, with a strong application to the nostril. Follow the eye foundation colours as in stage 2. |
