Introduction and Interview-The Many Styles of Cheng-Khee Chee, Vol.1

This is Extraordinary! - by Joanna Daneman from Middletown, DE
The video series by artist Cheng-Kee Chee gives you
a noted professor of art in your own home. This is extraordinary!
How many of us wish we could have had the opportunity to go to art
school? Here in this six-volume series, Professor Chee lectures to
us about art history in China, where he was born, the change from
Social Realism, the only artform allowed by Communist China in the
earlier years, and the rebirth of art later on. He discusses Taoist
principles in his art, going back to timeless Chinese philosophy.
This is like having my very own professor giving me insight on philosophy
and art history as well as showing me a way to paint in water media
that mixes East and West in a fresh, flowing and loose manner. I can't
think of anyone who wants to learn watercolor who wouldn't be thrilled
with this series.
DVD Volume 1 is an interview and lecture by Professor Chee about his
philosophy of art, and his four creative principles.
1. Thorough knowledge of the subject (the objective outer-world)
2. Strong feelings of the subject (the subjective, inner-world)
3. Understand and orchestrate the design (composition, design
elements to make an exciting painting)
4. Competent craftsmanship (drawing skills and handling the medium)
The second two principles are the process, which can be shared and
learned. The first two principles are the content, which comes from
the individual artist's heart. The Taoist way means to use a natural
way, making the process of painting effortless. Chee asserts this
is common sense, like paddling a canoe with the current rather against.
How does this apply to painting? Chee reminds the viewer that Taoist
philosophy of Yin-Yang means to harmonize the opposites: right side
of brain (emotion) with left side (reasoning), dark
and light, all elements in opposition yet in harmony.
The principles of creativity are constant, while the process evolves
as each artist grows in his or her craft. Chee has five different
processes to paint specific subjects.
1. Traditional approach to watercolor, where the subject is pre-selected.
2. Saturated-wet process for painting colorful subjects
3. Splash-color technique, used for landscapes with large geographical
subjects like mountains and ocean or lake. Chee shows us how to use
texture on treated illustration board to suggest the varied surfaces
of rocks, water and land.
4. Crinkling technique. This is used to express leafy textures, floral
forms, wooded subjects. Sized Oriental paper is used for this technique.
5. Marbelizing technique. This is used to express imaginary visions,
misty scenes, abstracts and semi-abstracted scenes. This is either
like marbelizing paper or fabric or creating a monotype.
Right here, you can see how Professor Chee has organized techniques
you may already have used in painting, like adding texture or wet-in-wet,
or monotyping but he has linked each technique to a type of subject.
This is a valuable guide to your subject (traditional street scene?
blooming spring orchard?) where the artist can choose a technique
that suits the subject and allows for effortless painting. After you
view some of Chee's extraordinary paintings and learn this secret,
you will be inspired to run to your studio and give them a try.
The next section of the first DVD is how to search for images to paint.
Chee discusses what he paints or sketches on location, how big a painting
he might do plein-air. He also shares his sketch book with the viewer,
a quick way to capture ideas. Chee paints directly into the sketch
book.
There is a chapter on searching for the abstract patterns. Creating
an abstract can be more baffling than creating a realistic subject.
Chee gives the artist a process to make an abstract (using the
marbeling technique and a viewfinder) to find an abstract design.
The abstract design can be used as a pattern on which to superimpose
a realistic design as well.
The DVD ends with an interview to learn more about this talented artist
who was born in China and grew up in Malaysia. The interview covers
background, influences, inspirations, personal style, and how to survive
as an artist. Chee also discusses the direction art is heading toward.
There is a section on jurying and competition, as well as much more.
This is much more than I expected from a DVD series. I expected a
series of demonstrations on painting technique, but what you get is
your own art professor, standing at your elbow, talking about life
and art and life as an artist. I would rate this series essential
for anyone who aspires to learn watermedia and possibly sell or show
their art. But even if you paint for your own pleasure, this is like
taking a university art course.

High Quality. - by Jan Jones from Fallbrook, CA
I watched the first two DVD's by Chee and they were very high quality. That is what made the decision to purchase the rest. Also, I'm purchasing for an art association in Fallbrook and since he was here a few times and we know him, it made the decision to spend the money for the association this way. Quality for our money is important.

The Traditional Watercolor Approach-The Many Styles of Cheng-Khee Chee, Vol.2

This is Extraordinary! - by Joanna Daneman from Middletown, DE
I have viewed a number of painting DVDs and videos,
and I have to say that this series by Creative Catalyst is one of
the most complete yet original I have seen. You get the opportunity
to learn with an accomplished artist who shares his techniques and
philosophy as well as learn basics about working in the art world.
I can't think of another series that I could recommend more highly
than this one. The only artist who might not like this series would
be one who works in ultra-realism with photographs and does not want
to incorporate abstract or loose technique into their work. There
are other videos and DVDs that deal with this specific kind of painting.
But if you want to learn the loose, free style of watercolor, this
series is possibly the best on the market.
Volume 2 deals with the traditional approach to watercolor subjects.
Chee takes the viewer through selecting a subject and composing, using
photographs or in plein air, then sketching either with sepia and
brush or with pencil. Chee has a fun and easy technique; use two rubber
bands to divide the subject (say a photo) into quadrants.
Then use the quarter sections as reference to sketch the shapes into
your paper that has also been divided into quarters. After the shapes
are sketched, one blocks in the shapes with mixed colors in thicker
paint. The rest of the DVD includes refining the painting, evaluating
the sketch, doing drafts towards a final result. This DVD is a complete
lesson, from materials to mixing paints, sketching, painting and evaluating
the result. Further DVDs will cover the other techniques (crinkling,
marbelizing, splashing, etc.)

Watercolor - Vibrant Orchid by Ann Pember

Highest Quality - by Brenda Beltramo from Tahoe, Nevada
This DVD has tremendous instructional value. Not only do you watch a wonderful artist creating beautiful work, but the filming and production is such high quality you'll feel like you are in the studio working with her on every step and technique. You'll be glad you get this one!

Encouraging and Motivating - by Jane Smith from unspecified
Ann Pember's explicit guidance by talking through her thought process while taking the viewer step by step, make this DVD one for beginner or advanced painter.
Limited palette, few brushes and easy techniques produce a successful watercolor within a painter's grasp as well as take some of the apprehension out of the medium.
Close-ups followed by distance shots shows us the importance of stepping back regularly to see how the shapes work in the whole picture.
It is definitely an encouraging and motivating teaching video to own.
I rate this DVD a 5.

Inspiration from the Garden in W/C - by Therese X. from Alabaster, Alabama
I've just finished viewing this DVD and think it's fabulous. I particularly appreciate that Susan gives an introduction to the individual techniques she will be using in the video. It's fun to practice those first, then go for the "big picture"!

Carl Dalio on Color Power: The Path to Visualizing Energetic Color

Carl Dalio on Color Power - by Ingrid Larson from Raleigh, NC
This is one of the best video workshops I've ever purchased. Carl's casual teaching style was just what I needed to finally "get it" in a few areas that I've been having trouble with! Being able to listen to Carl while watching him create this beautiful painting was truly a rewarding experience for me, so much so, that I've already ordered his other DVD title, "Drawing and Perspective". What a great gift for myself on this Mother's Day. THANK YOU for another great instructional workshop experience!

Excellent Job...one of the best - by Nancy S. from unspecified
I've just received this DVD and you are to be commended on how this video was filmed. It is for the viewer, as you did an excellent job of showing the mixing of the paint and close ups of the application.

Carl Dalio on Color Power - by Therese Xech from Alabaster, AL
I recently received my copy of Carl Dalio's DVD on Color Power containing his unique way of bringing vibrant yet peaceful color to a watercolor painting. He may be an architect by training but he's an artist---and a bit of a comic---in his soul! His wry sense of humor catches you by surprise. The "doghouse" segment on bouncing color is in itself worth the price of the tape! I never thought of perspective applying to colors in shadows! Can't wait to put it all into practice.

Carl Dalio - by Dianne Wham from Henderson, KY
I have not seen the video. I went to a Carl Dalio workshop, Painting in Kentucky, a couple of years ago. His use of color and his ability to draw free hand, right on the paper, is magical. Being an architect certainly adds a wonderful accuracy and fluidity to his drawings. He was fabulous. It was very inspiring. I am sure you will get a lot out of watching his video. I am looking forward to receiving it.

my first "good" watercolor. I'm a graphic designer and have
dabbled in
watercolor for the last few years but now I'm hooked and really excited.
Your tips and pointers were invaluable and I'm finally happy with a watercolor that I have created....and there will be many more to come. Softening the edges and spritzing the toothbrush turned my first waterfall scene on the Strathmore plate into a fairly good composition.
I still have much to learn, but my confidence is soaring. Thank you so much for sharing your talent so that others like myself can learn.

I heartily recommend this DVD to EVERY serious artist, or student. - by Jan Kunz, Artist from Kentfield, CA
If I could, I would tell every painter, no matter what their subject, that this DVD is a must!
As many of you know, I am a very realistic, watercolor painter and teacher. So it may surprise you to hear how much I learned from John Salminen's A DESIGNED APPROACH TO ABSTRACTION. Whether in a classroom or (lucky for us) in this DVD format, John Salminen’s workshop is a very important and valuable learning opportunity for ANY serious artist or student.
Not only does he describe a logical, intelligent approach to abstract painting, he clearly describes what makes beautiful shapes and how to achieve them in your paintings. He explains the basics of composition in understandable terms, and goes on to demonstrate how to make valuable color and value choices. Even if you know the rules he presents them in a way you cannot ignore or forget.
I heartily recommend this DVD to EVERY serious artist, or student.

Challenging, Fun and A Rewarding Experience! - by Tuva from McKenzie, Tennessee
Recently I admired the work of John Salminen at AWS Touring Exhibit in Tullahoma, Tn. I was excited to find this DVD! I found the video to be challenging, fun and a rewarding experience. It was the next best thing to attending a workshop by this well known artist. This video is worth the price. I am very proud of the piece of work I created. It will be interesting to see how his process will influence my own work. This video made me think more about the design process of a work. I wish I could show Mr. Salminenwhat I produced using this wonderful video. I think he would be proud of the results. Thanks!

An incredible experience - by Judith Fields from unspecified
This DVD is an incredible experience into the thoughts, approach, methods and creativity of an artist whose work I find so inspiring. The first time I watched the video, I was also struck by how cleverly it was created. There are several interactive menus the viewer can select that provide more information on specific subjects…such as Robbie’s choice of paints, brushes and paper. These “features” can be viewed independently of the whole DVD, or during the progressive viewing. The DVD’s menu is broken down into very logical and easily accessible steps, which is a great help during the painting process when you need information in a hurry!!!
The second time I viewed the DVD, I knew it was time to get started painting along with Robbie. She provided every detail of information needed in the way of preparation, as well as during each step of the painting process…and so many useful tips along the way. One really nice “extra” was her demonstration of creating the deckled edges of the paper, which I tried with delightful results! Another immensely helpful feature is her approach to editing and enhancing the painting…even after it has completely dried.
The DVD also provided several different examples of Robbie’s work, such that if exotic flowers are not one’s passion, her approach can be used to create paintings of all types of subjects. I am beginning my third painting now and each one is an improvement over the previous one. I am coming to truly understand what she means by planned spontaneity and how important the planning stage is in order to allow the spontaneity to “happen” on its own! What Robbie has shared in this DVD has given me a new insight into how I can loosen up my paintings without losing control. Thank you, Robbie, and CCP!!!

Taylor Ikin is an inspiration. She is a natural teacher. She can loosen you up to a state of pure expression you may not know you had in you. Following her methods will have you, indeed "singing and dancing a painting". Intense one-on-one instruction at its best!

THE BEST: All what you want and need - by Doris from Germany
When I started with watercolors I had so many questions. I found all answers in Susans DVD. This 2 Disc DVD Set is simply wonderful. Susan explains in a wonderful way and it is easy to learn with her. You will learn how to paint a wonderful rose, a glowing Lily, vibrant backgrounds, dewdrops, how to master lost and found edges, how to get a velvet look, how to paint a simple apple, that you would like to eat him and you will get a lot of tips. You look over Susans shoulder, she is not getting tired with explaining each step. Susan creates wonderful paintings, which are full of magic. You will see this also in her gallery on this DVD and there is also a slide show. The DVD is easy to manage with going from chapter to chapter --- you will never be tired to watch this DVD. This DVD is a "Must have it". Another "Must have it" is her NEW PORTRAIT WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP 2 Disc DVD Set. (on her website www.susanart.com) In this DVD you will learn how to paint beautiful natural skin tones, how to master hair, lips, eyes and fabric. Look again over her shoulder and learn, how she paints a wonderful portrait. Susan's DVDs are highly recommended and are all what you need and you surely learn all what you want about watercolor - you will love them as I do. Susan is very professional and so are her DVDs.

A brilliant watercolor DVD! - by Jean from France
Bonjour from France. I love this DVD!! The 2 discs are full of great information, beautifully presented. I have watched them through and through many times, and each time I learn something new. Susan creates stunningly beautiful paintings and she has a wonderful clear teaching style that I love. The DVD menu is really great too for easy navigation through all the interesting chapters. I highly recommend this DVD to others, and I hope to see more watercolor titles from Susan in the future. Top ratings!

Very professional job! - by Connie Burbach from Milwaukie, OR
This is the best video that I own. Very professional job...I'm recommending it to our Guild and Watercolor Society

Very "How To" - by Sarabeth Carr from Grand Rapids, MI
Great, very "how to" compared to some other videos I've seen. Your work encourages me to continue in my more detailed style as opposed to that taught by several floral watercolor teachers who don't want us to draw much. I love your background painting style. Nice effect and not so traumatic!

Great Instruction - by J. Findley from Corvallis, OR
Great instruction, I loved it!

DVD - Watercolor & Yupo-Designing for Content - Master Class by George James

This is a DVD I will watch again and again. - by Richard Zone from unspecified
"Designing for Content" is a wonderful mix of philosophy an methodology, existential truth and practical application. I really appreciated seeing George demonstrate his obvious mastery of the medium while at the same time revealing a truly childlike journey through the process. His delight at "happy accidents" and his telling excitement are contagious. I was torn between watching the action on the screen and a desire to rush to my studio, my watercolors and a fresh sheet of Yupo. This is a DVD I will watch again and again. George James has a gentle, encouraging spirit and he knows how to teach. I want more.

CCP, you did it again! - by Sylvia Delk from Chicago
CCP, you did it again! Where do I begin. This DVD is amazing--starting from George James the artist, and all the way to CCP's technical production of this master class. Great camera work, too. When I saw the running time of this complete DVD, I was delighted! This DVD covers drawing techniques, use of color, glazing, airbrush, a thorough design and structural lesson--plus so much more. I was so touched and absolutely loved listening to George James share a little of his personal past experiences as he demonstrated drawing from memory which resulted in the creation of a beautiful piece entitled, "The Music Lesson." An incredible artist and excellent teacher. When does his next DVD come out?!!

DVD - Watercolor - The Watercolor Portrait by Jane Angelhart

Your DVD is excellent!! - by Mary Jo R. from unspecified
I’m so excited about the information, techniques and etc. that you presented. Using the computer is such a great idea for me. Also, I’ve been moving away from opaque watercolors, and am so glad to have your list of transparent substitutes for many of the colors. The best new technique for me though, is your mapping the details first. I begin paintings tight and slightly anxious just as you described, and can imagine how moving from small brush and details to larger brushes to finish will help me move ahead with more confidence.
I believe your DVD is excellent!!

A great review for me - by Sherry D. from unspecified
Just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed this DVD. It has been . I feel like I am back in the workshop. And, my hats off to the videographer- he reproduced the colors exactly with great coverage.
Thanks for producing the DVD. I hope you sell a ton of them.
