DVD - Watercolor & YUPO - Dancing with YUPO: Tools and Techniques by Taylor Ikin

Dancing with Yupo

Watercolor Painting on YUPO Instructional DVD

Taylor Ikin explores the freedom YUPO synthetic paper gives the watercolor artist and reveals her masterful techniques to achieve lively tones while working quickly and boldly. In this instructional DVD workshop you will learn about working from a photo reference, about YUPO, about color and much more.

Dancing with YUPO: Tools and Techniques

The versatility of the synthetic paper gives watercolor artist Taylor Ikin the freedom that perfectly suits her approach to painting.

In this workshop, Taylor begins with an in-depth discussion of her favorite materials. She answers frequently asked questions about YUPO and explains how to paint, draw, revise and erase on synthetic paper. She reveals how she keeps paintings lively by eliminating earth tones from her palette and concentrating on exciting hues.

Taylor also teaches you to work big and fast using large bold strokes. This free-flowing style lends itself to her colorful scenes. She works to give a sense of her subject rather than trying to copy nature. She demonstrates how to work from a photo reference and to use a mirror to reverse the initial painting for evaluation. She shows you how to let your paint work for you and warns against the excessive tidiness that discourages natural shapes.

Taylor encourages you to relax, feel happy and enjoy the process. Her approach is high energy!

Watercolor & Yupo

Learn to Paint in Watercolor with Susan Harrison-Tustain
Other Production Companies

Susan Harrison-Tustain teaches her watercolor portrait painting process in this two disk set of watercolor instruction DVDs. Susan's instructional style is very similar to her approach in the floral watercolor instruction DVD. It is evenly paced to ensure that each step is secure before moving on to the next area of study. She divides her painting into background, skin, eyes, lips, hair, earrings, hat and dress. Near the end she reviews the painting to spot and make corrections.

Watercolor Portrait Workshop 2 Disc DVD Set

Susan Harrison-Tustain works on stretched hot press Arches watercolor paper and frequently begins painting by applying a light wash of yellow. She mixes delicate colors in a glass deviled egg dish and then with a controlled hand, sparingly applies color to her area of focus. The end result is a watercolor painting of photo-like realism.

The DVD contains a printable list of Susan's materials and color palette. Also printable is her original reference image, her line drawing, and a copy of the final painting.

Tustain's workshop is filmed using a single camera and ambient lighting. You even get a taste of the Australian locals when her video camera wanders to the back yard to show the flock of song thrushes making themselves heard.

In doing so, the difference that this technique makes in the final painting becomes clear.

After each technique demonstration, Frank uses completed watercolor paintings as examples of finished pieces. His style is bold and decisive.

Frank breaks down this watercolor workshop into learning chapters that cover, Direct Painting, Wet Into Wet, Color Patching, Easel Drizzling, Calligraphic Painting, Layering and Darks First. DVD - Watercolor - Frank Webb on Watercolor

Watercolor & Yupo

Learn to Paint in Watercolor with Frank Webb

Other Production Companies Frank Webb on Watercolor, produced in 1987, is a look into the thought process of one of America's most recognized watercolor artists. These watercolor lessons cover the whole process from conception to completion of a watercolor painting.

Frank Webb on Watercolor

In this watercolor instructional video, Frank Webb, ADW DF, NWS, quietly paints two complete watercolor paintings from value sketches that were done on site. During his painting process he discusses, in a voice over, the key issues pertinent to his process.

Frank begins by defining his chief purpose for choosing a particular scene. He creates a line drawing that works as a foundation for his juicy watercolor. He discusses light as metaphor, how art is based on insight rather than sight, what he looks for in a painting, what makes a painting successful, making a cohesive whole, figures in a painting, alternation of dark and light, warm and cool, use of push pull, edges, creating depth, calligraphy... and so much more.

Near the end of the watercolor workshop, Frank pulls out several paintings from his portfolio and explains their focus and technique. It is a fascinating overview packed with content. It should be noted that there is a painting of a nude briefly discussed toward the end of the workshop for those of you considering using this film in a classroom setting.

Originally filmed as a motion picture, this classic video is the perfect watercolor DVD for beginners to advanced artists. Frank Webb offers a wealth of knowledge, demonstrations and insightful commentary on several finished paintings. Creative Catalyst Productions is excited to offer this instructional video to our customers.
