DVD - Watercolor from Within: Transparent Layering with Barbara Nechis
If you’ve ever felt restricted in your painting, or wished that you could just create a scene on the paper without taking the time to sketch it first, this watercolor painting workshop with Barbara Nechis is perfect for building your confidence.
Over the course of this painting lesson, Nechis instructs students of all levels utilize the wet-into-wet watercolor painting technique as they create a stunning floral scene. Without a reference photo, physical subject, or sketched outline, Nechis demonstrates how to paint from within using a single spot of magenta paint placed confidently in the center of the page.
Using memory and emotion as her only inspirations, Nechis works outward from this center, using the flowing paint as her guide for what should come next. During the course of this workshop, students will learn how to make decisions about the composition of their water color painting quickly and with confidence.
Nechis encourages students to avoid mixing color on the page, but instead achieves blending by double-loading wide, square brushes and tilting her paper to make pigment flow.
As the demonstration progresses, Nechis explains her technique for transforming a loose, direct scene into an intricate, layered composition using only her intuition. Students will learn how to respond to what happens on the paper instead of planning a composition ahead of time. This will free emotion and memory during the creative process, and allow you to relay your passion for a subject on the page.
Nechis also emphasizes the importance of balance between repetition and variety. Students will learn how to corral transparent color with opaque pigments and contrast hard-edged elements with wet-into-wet petals.

Jean blends and lifts to create multiple values from a single glaze. She develops the entire face with each layer to maintain control of her values throughout the process. DVD - Breaking the Rules of Watercolour with Shirley Trevena
When you learn to play a new game, or perform a new task, it’s natural for the first question to be, “What are the rules”? Although they can be helpful at some points in the creative process, watercolor painting rules often do more to dampen inspiration and crush passion than they do to encourage it.
In this art instructional DVD featuring master watercolor artist Shirley Trevena, students will learn that in most cases, the rules of watercolor painting that have become popular over the years are really made to be broken.
This watercolor painting workshop supplies over an hour of one-on-one instruction time with Trevena, who takes students through the painting process from her first exciting concept all the way to how she knows when it is finished.
To demonstrate the liberty of watercolor painting without the rules, Trevena walks workshop participants through a variety of exercises to illustrate different aspects of her creative process, including: use of distortion in perspective, altering size relationships, use of saturated color and bleed-backs, incorporating favorite objects, and more.
Students will learn to emulate Trevena’s organic process for watercolor painting, allowing each part to grow naturally from its adjacent object. Trevena encourages each student to throw caution to the wind, not force elements that don’t belong, and to be willing to listen to the painting as it tells you where it really wants to go.
